Special summer program at a zen monastery

The meditation hall (zendo)

Creating a spring garden

There are still spaces available in this year’s Great Vow Zen Monastery summer program. Each lasts a month and the usual training fee of $500 is waived. Anyone may apply, regardless of age or meditation experience. The time periods are July 5 to August 5 and August 2 to September 2, 2012.

As a summer “resident practitioner” you’ll be fully involved in daily meditation, beginners’ instruction, vegetarian meals, dormitory accommodation, work practice, and community activities. You may also participate in meditation retreats offered to the public (see calendar of events).

Having lived and worked at the monastery during its founding days (2001-2002) and just returned from a week-long silent retreat there, I whole-heartedly recommend this opportunity to anyone interested in a zen-inspired way of living. The monastery is a cheerful place, the teachers are excellent, and the resident community welcoming and supportive.
